Yoga Pose: Reclining Hero Pose (Supta Virasana)

One of my favourite yoga poses I love to incorporate into my yoga practice is the Reclining Hero Pose (Supta Virasana). Supta means “lying down” in Sanskrit, while vira translates as “hero” or “champion.” This pose is especially helpful after any cardio session as the legs receive an intense and invigorating stretch.

The many benefits of this pose are:

  • Stretches the thighs, ankles, knees and the abdominal organs
  • Opens and releases the hips
  • Improves digestion
  • Opens and releases the lower back
  • Reduces menstrual pain
  • Reduces stress

How to do the Reclining Hero Pose:

  1. Sit on your heels, join your knees together and put your ankles apart
  2. Roll your calf muscles to the side and softly lower your pelvis on your mat between your feet
  3. Move your arms behind your back and slowly go down on your elbows then fully onto your back with your arms at your side
  4. Take your arms over your head and stretch them out behind you on the floor, with your palms facing the ceiling. Make sure your shoulder blades remain flat on the floor and that your knees do not lift off the floor
  5. Press your thighs together, breathe evenly and stay in this pose for 30-60 seconds

Happy Yoga-ing!!!

How Dogs Make For Great Yogis

Having always been an animal lover my entire life, I decided last year that it was time to get one of my own. I remember the day that I met my baby Jasper, a Yorkshire Terrier puppy. It definetly was love at first sight.

I find that dogs can teach us a lot about ourselves and really do make for Great Yogis:

1.)   Drink lots of water at any time during the day.

2.)   Always start their day with a good stretch and when they’ve been still for a while.

3.)   Run, walk and play daily.

4.)   Plenty of rest is necessary.

5.)   Be Loyal.

6.) If you want something, you go and get it.

7.)   When they see their loved ones come home, it really is the most joyous feeling in the world.

8.)   Being happy with what you have.

9.)   Enjoy each and every day to its fullest.

10.)  Always show unconditional LOVE.
